Thought process

Figure 1 -

Prior to starting, I cut out a bunch of collage material. When I saw the oversized coat and pants I knew I wanted that to be my main focus in this piece. However, I needed a background to frame the subject. I saw the shifting orange background from a photoshoot and decided to give it an interesting shape by sloping a part of it. In doing so this will hopefully add weight to the left side. Since, the model was siting I wanted to add a block of color to act at the seat. Once I saw the paintbrush in one of the magazines I knew I wanted to make that the "head" of the subject. The paintbrush gives a playful aspect to the piece as well as balancing out the orange background with a cool toned blue.

In figure one there was too much focus to the left side of the painting so to balance it out I added a solid rectangular color and overlapping a thin strip of black. The thin black strip will balance out the weight that was on the left.

In figure three I finished at home since I did not have enough time during school to complete it. I enjoyed having more time to work on my days off. I found it to be relaxing as well as a way for me to experiment with different textures. Specifically, the purple block, I initially lied down a light grey and left it to dry. I then added the purple on-top of the grey before this dried I grabbed a tissue and crumbled it together so when I pressed the tissue against the paper it would pick up some of the purple paint leaving the grey underneath while adding texture. This closely resembled the texture in the photo cut out. I decided in the end not to use the paintbrush as a head for the figure because it felt to animated. I wanted to add more texture and I did this by crumbling the thin black strip and green block. I did not flatten it because I wanted it to pop off the paper and if it was displayed it would be interesting how the lights in a gallery would play off the 3d paper.
